Health Benefits of a Ketogenic Diet

Adopting a ketogenic diet is a proven way to lose weight, but did you know it has many other health benefits too? Studies done by leading researchers all over the world have shown that a low-carb, high-fat diet can help correct or control life-threatening diseases. Here are just 7 of the ways ketones can contribute to a long, healthy life.

Ketones vs. High Cholesterol

One of the first things anyone who switches to a ketogenic diet will hear is concerns over cholesterol. We’re so wired to see fat as evil; that surely increasing your intake will cause your cholesterol levels to skyrocket. But a study published in 2004 by the National Institute of Health shows just the opposite.

The study lasted for 6 months and tracked 83 overweight or obese individuals and, when it was over, every single patient saw their levels of bad cholesterol drop and good cholesterol rise. A follow-up in 2006 with different patients showed the same results.

Ketosis and Diabetes

One of the most dramatic diseases that ketones are said to improve is diabetes. It’s not surprising that cutting way down on the amount of sugar you consume is good for you, but some specialists seem to be surprised at just how much a keto diet can help.

It turns out that carbs, which cause your blood sugar to spike erratically, are behind almost every case of Type II Diabetes — that’s no surprise. But what’s startling is that over 32 weeks, a ketogenic diet performed better than the recommended low-fat diabetes diets that doctors and nutritionists typically recommend.

Just by ditching carbs and eating a healthier diet rich in fat and protein, you’re doing more for your health than any nutritionist would have guessed.

Ketosis and Epilepsy

Epilepsy and other seizure disorders can be difficult for doctors to diagnose and treat, often tragically. In some cases, anti-epileptic drugs just don’t work or aren’t tolerated well, especially in children.

Doctors developed one of the first low-carb, high-fat diets — the MCT ketogenic diet — as a way to reduce epileptic seizures. It worked, and that diet is still prescribed to many patients who don’t respond to medication.

Seizure disorders aren’t the only neurological disease that a ketogenic diet may be able to control. Studies are currently being conducted to test the effectiveness of ketone bodies as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.

Ketosis and Metabolic Syndrome

Ketones aren’t just effective against bad cholesterol. Metabolic syndrome, a collection of diseases and disorders that cause your risk of heart attack and stroke to skyrocket, can also be improved by following a keto diet.

According to a study done in Spain, eating a modified ketogenic diet can be an effective way to cure metabolic syndrome. Doctors followed 22 obese individuals for just three months, and by the end of the trial, every patient saw their blood pressure, heart rate, blood glucose levels, and weight drop back toward safe levels.

When they wrote up their findings, the doctors “conclude[d] that [the study] could be an effective and safe way to cure patients suffering from metabolic syndrome.”

Take Control of Your Health With Keto

Every day more evidence is published showing that a diet low in sugar and high in protein and fat is ideal for your health. If you’re already eating foods that help you burn ketones instead of sugar, you’re doing the right thing. If not, it might be time to think about how much better you’d feel if you made a change.

With studies like these piling up year after year, it’s only a matter of time before your doctor recommends you give ketosis a try. Don’t wait around. Take a step in the right direction; live a happy and healthier life starting today! Check out my favorite products here.
